A key element of the Pestalozzi Children\u2019s Foundation<\/a>\u2019s projects is supporting the professional development of staff within its partner organisations, thereby strengthening local expertise, organisational capacity and resources. A current example from Tanzania shows why this capacity development is so important, and how quickly it can make an impact.<\/span><\/p>\n

In June, the first disaster risk reduction (DRR) training for staff of partner organisations was held in Mbozi District. Over five days, participants gained a clear understanding of the full disaster risk management cycle, prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery, and how DRR can be systematically integrated into project planning and delivery.<\/span><\/p>\n

The training was based on international and national standards, such as the Comprehensive School Safety Framework, UNESCO\u2019s Green School Quality Standard, and Tanzania\u2019s national disaster management strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Resilient schools and communities<\/b>
\n<\/b> A highlight of the training was a visit to Itumpi Primary School, where participants carried out a practical risk analysis: identifying potential hazards, assessing available resources, and reflecting on actual vulnerabilities in the school environment. These hands-on exercises strengthened their ability to assess risks at community level and develop appropriate protective measures.<\/span><\/p>\n

Encouragingly, project staff began applying their new knowledge straight away: shortly after the training, the PCF country office received feedback that partner organisations in Karatu District had already considered DRR principles in classroom construction and implemented corresponding measures. The knowledge gained has also been incorporated into the 2026 annual planning.<\/span><\/p>\n

The DRR training has therefore laid an important foundation for building safer and more resilient learning environments and schools in Tanzania.<\/span><\/p>\n
